Ford has taken the wraps off the all-new 2018 Ford Expedition full-size SUV, with more interior room, updated connectivity, and a host of new features and driver-assist technology.
Despite growing larger in most dimensions, the new Expedition weighs 300 pounds less than the outgoing model thanks to all-aluminum bodywork. In addition to shedding weight, one of the goals for the redesign was to create a less boxy style for the largest of Ford’s SUVs. Rounded edges and a lower overall roof height — despite more headroom inside — help give it a softer, more aerodynamic look.
Inside, the new Expedition has seating for up to eight people with plenty of space left for cargo behind the third row of seats. Access to that row has been made easier by virtue of a power-sliding and -folding second-row seat. With the first two rows folded flat, there’s room for the proverbial 4-by-8-foot sheet of plywood. But for buyers who need even more cargo room, an extended-wheelbase version, called the Expedition Max, will be available.
Depending on trim level — XLT, Limited and Platinum — interior appointments range from practical to luxurious, with such amenities as plush carpets, diamond-stitched leather seat edging and wood trim. New available connectivity and convenience features include wireless charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot that supports up to 10 users, and power for occupants in all rows from a total of four 12-volt sockets, six USB charge points and a 110-volt outlet.
Standard and available driver-assist technologies new to the Expedition for 2018 include adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, a 360-degree camera and enhanced active park assist. Ford says to expect best-in-class towing capability from the new Expedition, and available Pro Trailer Backup Assist helps drivers back their trailers easily with the twist of a knob.
The 2018 Expedition is powered by a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine with stop-start technology that Ford says makes this the most powerful Expedition ever. It drives the rear wheels or, optionally, all four wheels through a 10-speed automatic transmission.
The 2018 Ford Expedition goes on sale this fall at Ford dealers. Pricing will be announced closer to the on-sale date.
