Hot on the heels of the new E-Class sedan’s introduction last year, Mercedes-Benz debuted the 2018 E-Class Coupe in Detroit. As it twirled on the auto show turntable, it was clear that the coupe is even more of a looker, integrating design cues from the AMG GT that are surely not unintentional. Its roofline arches back gracefully and terminates well aft into a truncated, upturned decklid.
The 2018 E-Class Coupe is more than simply an E-Class sedan without rear doors. The coupe’s length and wheelbase are shorter than the sedan’s, and its track width is widened by a startling 2.6 inches. The coupe jettisons the sedan’s center seating position in the backseat, providing accommodations for a maximum of two rear passengers, just like the outgoing coupe. Note the lack of a side roof pillar, too — the E-Class Coupe’s pillarless “hardtop” body style improves visibility while bestowing it with a breezily distinct look.
Despite trimmer dimensions than the sedan, the 2018 E-Class Coupe is significantly larger than the model it replaces. The previous E-Class Coupe was actually built on the smaller C-Class platform, which made it an altogether different animal than its E-Class sedan counterpart. Interior space in the 2018 E-Class Coupe is said to be significantly expanded as a result, with engineering boss Ola Källenius reporting that his 6-foot-4-inch frame fits comfortably in the backseat. That’s something you couldn’t say about the outgoing model.
At launch, the Coupe will be offered in E400 guise, where it will be equipped with the same 329-horsepower twin-turbo V6 found elsewhere in Mercedes’ lineup. 4Matic all-wheel drive is optional, but the nine-speed automatic is not — it’s the only gearbox available. Weight figures haven’t been announced, but it’s light enough to hit 60 mph in a scant 5.5 seconds (5.2 seconds for all-wheel-drive variants). No other engines or variants were announced, but the safe money is on future coupe models that mirror those of the sedan — a turbocharged four-cylinder base model and a rip-snorting, twin-turbo V8-powered AMG variant.
Pricing and fuel economy numbers for the 2018 E400 Coupe haven’t been released, but we expect them to be similar to the outgoing model’s. We’ll know more before the coupe reaches dealers this summer.
